When a timer is the better fit
- You do not want to grant camera permission.
- Your goal is to interrupt long work blocks and change position.
- You want a distance-gaze reminder or a prompt to check foot support.
- Your camera angle changes frequently or you work away from a fixed desk.
- You prefer a fully predictable cadence.
Time-based prompts are intentionally unaware of what your body is doing. That limitation is also their simplicity. You can use them during travel, camera calls, low light, or any task where posture landmarks are unreliable.
When camera-assisted cues may be useful
- You repeatedly drift toward the screen soon after a generic reminder.
- You want fewer prompts when you remain near the reference you selected.
- You have a reasonably stable desk and camera position.
- You understand what the tool processes and are comfortable with that boundary.
A responsible camera monitor should calibrate to the user, tolerate ordinary movement, and wait for change to persist. It should also make uncertainty clear. A two-dimensional webcam view cannot determine joint pressure, muscle effort, pain, or whether a position is medically safe.
Why “both” is often the practical answer
Camera landmarks can help with visible head, shoulder, and torso change. They cannot reliably know when you need to look into the distance, stand, walk, or change the way your feet are supported. A combined system can reserve camera cues for visible drift while using separate timers for work-rhythm needs.
A posture cue answers “Did a visible pattern change?” A work-rhythm reminder answers “Has this block gone on long enough?”
