1. The camera becomes measurements, not a judgment

Modern browser and desktop tools can run a pose-landmark model directly on the user’s computer. The model estimates the location of visible body points in each frame. A posture tool can then derive limited signals—such as the apparent position of the head relative to the shoulders or a change in the shoulder line.

Those signals are not a medical scan. Camera angle, lighting, loose clothing, occlusion, and how much of the body is visible can all affect the estimate. NIOSH has explored computer-vision measurements for ergonomic assessment and explicitly notes that inaccurate observational estimates can lead to ineffective conclusions. A consumer posture reminder should therefore describe what it sees narrowly and communicate uncertainty.

2. Calibration creates a personal reference

A fixed rule such as “your ear must always sit at exactly this angle” ignores differences between bodies, desks, cameras, and comfortable working positions. Personal calibration asks the user to settle into a position that works for the current setup and saves derived reference measurements.

PostureKind uses front and side views because a flat image cannot infer every direction equally well. During monitoring, it compares current visible measurements with that local reference. If the chair, screen, or camera moves, the old reference becomes less meaningful and the user should recalibrate.

3. Smoothing and persistence reduce noisy reminders

People naturally look down, reach, turn, laugh, stretch, and lean. A reminder on every changed frame would be wrong and irritating. A calmer monitor smooths measurements over time, gives movement a personal range, and waits to see whether a change lasts before offering a cue.

The aim is not to hold one pose. It is to make a sustained change noticeable before an hour disappears.

This also explains why a timer and a camera monitor are different tools. A timer reminds you because time passed. A camera-based cue responds to a visible change. Both can be useful, and neither can see the whole workday.

4. What the webcam cannot know

  • Whether a position is comfortable, painful, or medically safe for you.
  • Whether your feet are supported outside the camera frame.
  • Whether your eyes need a distance break.
  • How much pressure is on a joint or which muscles are working.
  • Whether a visible change reflects fatigue, a camera shift, clothing, or an ordinary task.

That is why PostureKind separates visible posture signals from timed movement, distance-gaze, and support reminders. The product can help you notice patterns; it cannot diagnose a condition or replace individualized care.

5. Privacy depends on where the frames go

“AI camera” does not automatically mean cloud video. A model can run locally in the browser or desktop app, allowing frames to be processed transiently without being recorded or uploaded. The important questions are concrete: Are frames transmitted? Are images stored? Are raw landmarks retained? What account or progress data leaves the device?
